A pre-pointe assessment is a physical assessment by the podiatrist to determine your readiness to start pointe work. Dancing en pointe places huge physical demands of a dancer's body and so injuries can easily and quickly develop if the body does not have sufficient strength, joint flexibility and technique.
What do pre-pointe assessments involve?
A pre-pointe assessment involves a physical evaluation, functional assessment as well as collecting both dance and injury history. We follow international guidelines to ensure your assessment is relevant and thorough.
Physical evaluation addresses your joint range of motion and strength which identify your suitability for pointe work and risk of injury.
The functional assessment is comprised of dance specific movements and tests that challenge your entire body. All of the information we gather gives us good insight as to your coordination, balance, strength and control. These are all fundamental for you to remain on the small base that a pointe shoe provides.
By the end of your assessment you will have a detailed understanding of what is required to begin pointe work and importantly whether you are ready.
